Rucksteady is a focused tracker for rucking - walking with a weighted pack. It records your route, distance, duration, pace, load, and elevation, estimates the calories honestly (load-aware, not generic-walking math), and saves your rucks to Apple Health. This page answers the common questions and tells you how to reach a human.

What Rucksteady does
Rucksteady is deliberately a rucking app - not a run tracker, a strength log, or a social feed. It does one thing and tries to do it very well:
- tracks a ruck - route, distance, pace, elevation and duration, from the moment you tap Start
- puts the load first - the pack weight you set drives an honest, load-aware calorie estimate
- pauses and resumes, so a shoelace or a road crossing does not cost you the ruck
- keeps your history, and syncs it to your account once you sign in
- writes finished rucks to Apple Health as workouts, with calories, distance and route
Do I need an account?
No. You can record, review and keep rucks without one, and nothing syncs while you are signed out. Sign in with Apple when you want your rucks on more than one device or on the web - it is offered at the end of the first-run flow and from your account in Settings. We never ask Apple for your name, and you can use its private email relay.
Why are my calories different from another app?
Because most apps count a loaded ruck like an empty walk. Rucksteady uses published, load-aware models that account for your body weight, pack weight, speed, and grade. We aim to be honest and citable, not to claim false precision - real loads add a modest amount over an unloaded walk, more on hills and heavy packs. There is natural variance in any estimate, and we say so.
How does Rucksteady use Apple Health?
With your permission it reads your body weight, height, biological sex, and date of birth to estimate calories, and writes your finished rucks back as workouts. Nothing it reads from Apple Health leaves your device - those values are used here and stay here, whether you read them from Health or type them in Settings. Only the finished ruck itself (calories, distance, route, and so on) syncs to your account, once you sign in. Grant or revoke Health access in the Health app, under Profile → Apps → Rucksteady.
Do I have to grant location access?
Location records your route, distance, and pace while a ruck is running, and keeps recording while your screen is locked. It is also used to look up your local weather on the Home screen, which sends just those coordinates to the weather service to fetch the forecast there. You can set a manual weather location in Settings and leave location off entirely. Without it you can still log a ruck manually, but we cannot draw a route. Change it in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Rucksteady.
Can I edit or delete a ruck?
Yes. Every ruck can be edited - load, notes, and the rest - and deleted in the app. Deleting a ruck also removes the workout it wrote to Apple Health.
Can I turn off map data collection?
Yes. Maps are rendered by Mapbox, which collects de-identified map telemetry. Tap the information (ⓘ) control on any map to opt out.
Does Rucksteady track me or show ads?
No. There are no ads, no analytics services, no crash reporters, and no cross-app tracking. Subscriptions are handled by Apple and recorded by our subscription provider so they work across your devices - that is the only thing of its kind in the app. Our privacy policy has the full detail.
How to delete your account and data
You can remove everything yourself, from inside the app:
- open Settings in Rucksteady
- choose Delete Account
- confirm
What deletion does not touch
Workouts you previously saved to Apple Health stay on your device - they are yours. Remove those in the Health app. Account deletion itself is permanent and cannot be undone; if you would rather we handled it, email privacy@rucksteady.com.
